The Supreme Court: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

In the wake of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, John Oliver discusses the future of the Supreme Court, why the government doesn’t always represent the political leanings of the electorate, and how those issues will impact the next generation of Americans.

No more expended, apply the LAW!!!!!!!! Stop being a JERK... What is wrong with the Constitution of thew USA that all agree upon? I see you all need a policy that helps you get integrated with the law and none of you should make any amendment anymore so everyone make sense. Supreme Court with Barrett was a joke, now playing ping pong affects new generation, furthermore, it is traumatizing knowing that the policies always attack plebeians and peasants and nothing is done from Supreme Court in term of power and decisions when all by the ears from congress down all amends everything from everywhere in their personal interest and share through their policy from the state to the top wicked and abhorrent and the answer is they basically rive the country goods and services.

by design not a pure democracy doesn't mean by design not a democracy of any sort. It is a republic that is a representative democracy. There are democratic elections for political representation. That makes it a democracy. The country was founded, discussions about democracy used the term to mean pure democracy, so dropped the term pure as something that was generally understood. We no longer use the term democracy to mean pure democracy, we use it in the more general sense. Somewhere along the line, though, people decided to conflate the Republican party with the idea of a republic, and the Democratic party with the idea of democracy, making it seem that republics and democracies were mutually exclusive, which has never been the case.

Oliver's views were always progressive and that was clear from when he began with this show, however, it used to be different. It used to be that he would criticize and attack things that most people can get behind as he was calling out true injustices or giving limelight to very pertinent subjects that were otherwise often not talked about so much. Now, it's just a Republican bashing fest. To 99% of people it may seem the same because very few people spend hours a day following politics and not from a partisan perspective. Per se, he points out that tape from the republican senator talking about blocking Trump's appointee yet the Democrats would have, absolutely have in the past and will do the same in the future, the ONLY and ONLY difference is that in this specific case it was the Republicans that were in the position where they had the votes to block Garland's vote and streamline Trumps'. Yet, on most TV channels (as they are mostly liberal-leaning), all you would hear about this subject is how hypocritical this is and bla bla bla and they point out things like what this senator said or whatever other soundbite they have and there are tons seeing as all these politicians have been doing this for years and years and years. Conversely, on Fox and the few conservative outlets, you would hear the soundtapes of what Chuck Schummer and others were saying before calling it hypocritical. At the end of the day, these clowns are collectively taking everyone for a ride and it's not by accident. With the amount of research they do for these shows and the level of quality with which its done on honest subjects, there's 0 chance they don't know, they know everything and they know the message they are peddling is complete bullshit but they want you to believe a specific thing. Yeah... those are most shows, TV programs and so on that talk about current events. John Oliver's show wasn't a show like most, not a comedy 45 mins like others. John Oliver's show was good, excellent even, I watched probably every episode because it thought you something, it was genuine and it brought positivity to the world that way, whatever your political allegiance. Sadly, that's changed, now it's just leftist propaganda like the rest. I still try to watch but it's not the same... when you extensively know the subjects he covers, it isn't hard to spot the manipulations. I still watch but I cringe and I'm genuinely displeased at the bullshit and cheap manipulation when I see it because although it won't fool me, I know 95%+ of people are unprepared to deal with the information and they take it as face-value. This puts you somewhere in the category of a lot of the people you criticize here weekly John. Hope you wake up and stop sucking up to people who aren't nearly as good as you want to promote them to be because everything in life has a price and the "John Oliver Effect" may not be to history what it began as and what it could have been. Cheers.

Here's the was more or less written this way for a reason. If you make the changes you're proposing, all it would do is create a new minority that would be discriminated against and be underrepresented. One simple change that could be made, is to end the winner take all system all together. Make it so every state HAS to split its electoral votes proportional to the popular vote in that state! I truly wish my vote actually fucking counted in NY. I'm conservative on some issues and progressive on others. But what I think in a Presidential election doesn't matter, or even a state election, because my vote and pretty much the vote of everyone above Orange County is quieted by NYC. News flash, a city of millions of people need different laws and have a different way of life than rural populations in the same state. Being a rural voter in any state with a major city like NY or Chicago is a recipe for practical disenfranchisement, especially with a winner take all system. Now you want to apply that to a federal level with Representation in the Senate? Oh wait, that's what the House of Representatives is for! It's why we have a bicameral legislature. The House ensures the majority has the support to make legislation, with its seats determined by population, and the Senate is a check on any proposed laws by giving every state equal representation so the minority still has a voice. Oh, and John, as someone in the middle who hates both parties for different reasons, you sound just like the Republicans you're railing against, which there are plenty of them in the Democratic Party as well. Both parties are a fucking parasite sucking the life out of this country.

I think one of America's biggest problems is its concept of time. America has only been America for 240 years (going off the end date of the revolution). That, for a European, is a comically short amount of time historically, yet the constitution and institutions of America are discussed in a way that's immovable because they've been around 'forever'. Like the consitution sets things in stone because it's so 'ancient'. Seriously USA, there isn't shame in recognising that people who founded a country using systems borrowed from ancient Greece, may have got some stuff wrong. That it doesn't work as well in a modern world post industrial revolution, civil rights movement and suffrage. Remembering how short a time period 240 years is might just help when considering conversations about race and discrimination just saying... Reparations doesn't seem that outlandish when you consider that jim crow laws and banks not lending to black people is in living memory

"A republican gouvernment without popular support". Sorry John, but just because you want it to be so doesn't mean it is. Republicans do have a very large POPULAR support base! You know, all those people that Dear Hilary shoved aside and smeared as "deplorables". You need to have some honesty about this, and recognised that the popular vote is not the DEMOCRAT PARTY'S sole property : it goes something along 60/40 at best in republican's favor, because statistics remind us that a vast majority of this country's demographic is mostly white people, like over 60% + to be correct. There has obviously been a demographic shift because of natality rates and immigration over the past decades. But "democratic" ideals are not dominant in the US. Not even in said black/latino communities where many individuals prefer the republican vote over the democrat vote. And all the arguments you provided in this show can just as easily be made against the democrats, especially in the 2020 election, where the electoral collage ruled in favor of the democrat candidate, despite serious concerns of voter fraud from DEMS, and greater numbers in favour of trump than in 2016.

Please Do A Piece on Michael Jackson Hi, I’m writing to you because Last Week Tonight as opposed to other such shows actually cares about issues rather than chasing the headlines. It has been 11 years since Michael Jackson passed away yet to this day what the common consensus is that he is a taboo subject for many. I recall you guys once did a piece on Public Shaming. Michael Jackson was a genius, an abused child. He was strange. He was one of the few major stars from the 80s who came out of the 80s without a heroine addiction. He in his own way did many, Many strange things, but so do most other superstars. And more than others he actually cared. About children, about the earth. About the issues we are discussing to this day. While Icons like Freddy Mercury, Elvis Pressley, Prince, Beetles and many more are known for their good works, Michael is known for the something which he has repeatedly been acquitted for. It’s the truth that anyone looking for will find instantly but due to the “where there is smoke there is a fire” narrative, even 11 years after his death, the new media treats him like a criminal. All his trial pages are open for the public to read. He WAS weird. Making a ranch called neverland, hanging out with children. Trusting people he shouldn’t. But I urge you please cover him, hear beyond the noise like you guys often do. The most successful African American Artist of all time was a humble man child, who respected women, loved children and cared about our environment. He was not a heroine junkie, a private man who did not share his disease even all the way back in 1993 even though he was accused of wanting to become a “White Man”. He was eccentric. Hanging out with animals and caring about them. This article covers multiple sources, some of which I had read previously. Michael Jackson was a multi talented millionaire pop star, who was not an alcoholic, was a caring father, a filial son, Treated women with respect, cared about the planet and it’s beings. The press that constantly kept DASHING him, had found a way to subvert their guilt. All those years of calling him a “Jacko”, “monkey” and many more hurtful things was justified if he was a paedophile. They NEEDED him to be guilty. Such a man cannot exist in Hollywood. Such public shaming had allowed and to this day allows Michael to be a victim to all this slander. Please do a piece, if not one that exonerates him then one that once and for all cements the fact the Michael Jackson, the greatest pop star, the first African American Idol was a paedophile. Not through unknown sources or flimsy headlines but through concrete proof. A news echoing in a closed chamber will not reach anyone, most fans who what to know the truth know it, other people will read the headlines but not the explanations. It’s about time the general public knows. Please do a piece on Michael, the blatant mistreatment by the media, The systematic racism he faced during his trials. Please don’t let the first African American Singer be remembered for the things he did not do, He was weird, weird enough to annoy Freddy Mercury with Bubbles feedbacks, weird enough to let kids crack raw eggs over Michael Jackson, Weird enough to play water balloons with children. But he was not a paedophile and the world needs to acknowledge that. He was in no way a “Perfect Human” but he tried his best to live right and we should not punish him for doing that. On this year please exonerate this Black man, the Justice System has done it two decades ago, it’s about time everyone else does. Please do a piece on Michael Jackson. #spreadtheawareness #justiceformichael #hedeservedbetter
